Credit Report Dispute Letter #1 (Initial)

Use this letter when your credit reports contain inaccurate, erroneous, outdated, misleading, or unverifiable information. Removing this type of information improves your credit scores.

Our personal credit history is one of our most important assets, and thus we must guard it carefully. Any inaccurate information should be corrected so that potential creditors, employers, insurance companies, and other organizations see an accurate picture of our credit profile when they request copies of our credit reports.

Consumers can have inaccurate information corrected by sending the credit reporting agencies (CRA) a written request outlining exactly what needs to be corrected. The easier you make it for CRAs to verify your dispute as legitimate, the quicker they will correct your credit profile, and in turn the quicker it improves your ratings.

WARNING! Accurate and timely information cannot be removed from your personal credit reports! Use the free sample letter below only if you believe the information you are disputing is inaccurate! Use the example below to compose your own personal dispute letter.

Remember, when disputing information on credit reports it’s important to use specific words such as erroneous, outdated, misleading, or unverifiable. Just stating why you failed to pay the debt will not compel credit reporting agencies to launch an investigation into your dispute.
